Call Before You Dig — 8-1-1

It is critical that contractors and homeowners observe Georgia's "Dig Safely" laws. Dig Safely is a nationwide educational campaign established to enhance safety, environmental protection and service reliability by reducing underground facility damage.

All excavators, including private citizens and public contractors, must notify the Utilities Protection Center of Georgia (UPC) at 8-1-1 at least 48-hours (excluding weekends and holidays) before digging underground or working within 10 feet of overhead utility lines. The UPC in turn, notifies the member utility companies of the impending work. The 48-hour lead-time gives each of these companies, with lines in the work area, an opportunity to mark all underground pipes or cables so that they are easily identifiable.

The UPC encourages four Dig Safely practices:

1) Call before you dig.

2) Wait the required amount of time.

3) Respect the marks.

4) Dig with care.

For more information visit the UPC’s website at www.gaupc.com.
