DSL Frequently Asked Questions
What is provided when I sign up for DSL service from BTC?
A DSL modem, up to five free DSL filters, up to seven free email addresses and free activation with a 12-month agreement.
What is a filter and why do I need one?
DSL puts noise on your phone line. To prevent the noise, a filter is needed on each phone jack for any device other than your DSL modem. Example: phones, fax machines, satellite receivers, caller ID boxes, answering machines, alarm systems, etc. The lack of a filter on your phone or fax machine can cause problems with your DSL connection.
Can I use my phone and fax machine if I have DSL service?
Yes. Users can still use their phones/faxes for incoming/outgoing calls while they use DSL service for Internet access.
How am I billed?
Charges are billed monthly on your Brantley Telephone statement. Call our business office at 912-462-5111 for complete details.
What hardware do I need to use DSL?
A computer with a minimum O/S (operating system) of Windows 98 or higher, and a minimum of 128mb of memory is needed. To use DSL, you need a NIC (network interface/Ethernet card). The customer must make sure that a NIC is installed in their computer prior to our installation. A NIC may be purchased at any store that sells computer hardware. Instructions will be included on installing the NIC yourself, or the store where you purchased the card may recommend a computer technician to install the card for you.
Can I use a different DSL modem besides what BTC offers?
Other modems may be used, however, Brantley Telephone offers 24-hour technical support on BTC-supplied modems only.
Can I connect multiple computers to my DSL service?
While more than one computer can be connected using a DSL router, BTC is responsible for connecting and supporting only one computer. You will need to contact a local computer vendor for any routing or support of additional computers.
What are some things that can be checked before contacting technical support?
- Make sure your modem is plugged in and powered on.
- If you are using a modem purchased from BTC, your Ready/Status light will be solid green.
- Check that your connection between the modem and the computer is connected. On our modems, the Link/LAN light will be solid green if it is connected properly.
- Make sure your phone line is plugged into the phone jack in the wall or into a surge strip. To check your surge strip, unplug the modem's phone cord from the surge strip and plug it directly into a phone jack. If your modem's Ready/Status light is solid green with the line plugged directly into the phone jack, your surge strip should be replaced.
- Some electrical devices, such as cordless phones, may cause interference. Make sure all phones are plugged into a filter.
I tried the above steps and my DSL service is still not working. What do I do now?
BTC offers DSL technical support seven days a week, 24 hours a day by calling 1-866-364-5004.
