From Brantley County: Residential Garbage Service

Posted: Jul 20, 2010

UPDATE (08-03-10) - Please be advised that all green trash dumpsters have been removed from the sites located throughout the county.  Door-to-door trash pickup is underway and will be the only method of disposing of household garbage moving forward.  Bulk items and green waste will still be accepted at the Smyrna landfill.  Persons illegally dumping garbage at previous sites will be prosecuted.

NAHUNTA, GA (07-20-10) - Routing of the garbage service is ongoing and will be completed before the end of the month; currently two routes have been developed for most of the eastern portion of Brantley County and one route has been developed for the western end of Brantley County.  The central portion of the County is still in development.  The days of pick up for the different routes will be identified on a tag secured to individual garbage carts that have been placed or will be placed near your mail box or driveway.

Due to our 911 system being so new all county offices have not completed the transition of 911 addressing from the previous rural route addressing which has created some issues with garbage carts being placed at all addresses.  Please understand there will be a small number of addresses not identified and each of these will be corrected upon notice of the problem. Mr. Scott Smith will be in charge of identifying addresses that should be served and are not receiving service; also Mr. Smith will have the charge of identifying addresses that should be paying the annual garbage fee on their tax bill.

Actual garbage cart pick up will begin the week of August 2, 2010; your pick up day will be identified on the tag secured to your individual garbage cart. If you have not received a garbage cart and pay the annual garbage fee, please contact Mr. Scott Smith at 912/462-8228.  He will complete a review of the address and fee payment.   If you have received a cart and should not have, please contact Mr. Smith to correct that situation. Returning the garbage cart will not necessarily eliminate the garbage fee from the tax bill.

Payment for the residential garbage service will continue as it has for many years.  The payment is based on the annual garbage fee that has been set by the Board of County Commissioners; you will not receive a monthly invoice in the mail as the cost of the service will be part of your annual tax bill.

Non-residential sites will not have a garbage cart placed at their place of business or public facility.  Each business or public facility will need to contact a commercial garbage contractor to arrange pick up of that facility's refuge. If your property requires or you desire multiple garbage carts because there are is more than one home on a single parcel, these will be provided as requested and additional fees will apply.

The current dumpsters at multiple locations in Brantley County will no longer be available for household garbage as of August 9; the dumpsters will be removed as residential service will replace the dumpster sites.  The Smyrna Landfill will remain open for green waste and yard clippings; no household garbage will be accepted.  Bulk items will be taken at the Smyrna Landfill as in recent times.  This program will continue but changes in the fee system may come at a later date.

We appreciate your cooperation through this transition period.
